Semester only courses

Introduction to Art  50.4211001. This course introduces students to media, processes, elements of art, principles of design, language of art , art as production, history, criticism, aesthetics. Available to students in grades 9-12. No pre-requisite required. 

Art History I 50.4911001This is a hand’s on course which allows students an opportunity to learn about past cultures and their artworks and processes through the creation of drawn, painted, and sculpted artworks.  Art History I also includes the study of paintings, sculpture, architecture, and various minor art forms from the Paleolithic to the Early Renaissance eras.  Aesthetics and art criticism will be incorporated into the course as well as a multi-media approach to learning history.  This course also fulfills the art pre-requisite requirement for all level I advanced classes. No pre-requisite required.

Ceramics I   50.4411001 Students will learn about the characteristics and design in clay; basic hand building methods, history of ceramic arts; glaze chemistry, surface techniques Prerequisites: Intro to Art. Available to students in grades 9-12.

Ceramics II    50.4411002 Students will learn the chemistry of clay bodies, hand building and/or potter’s wheel, glaze formulation; decorative techniques, kiln firing atmospheres. Prerequisites: Intro. to Art, Ceramics I. Available to students in grades 10-12

Ceramics III   50.4411003 Students will continue to build upon their knowledge of ceramic processes including hand building techniques as well as an in depth exploration of thrown vessels on the potters wheel.  Students will use the elements of art and the principles of design to analyze, develop and build their artworks.  Prerequisties: Ceramics I and II Available to students in grades 10-12.

Computer Art I 50.4724001 This course will acquaint students with the use of the computer and digital media for production of art. This one-semester course is geared toward developing artiststic skills and computer skills to communicate ideas through print and multi-media presentations. The majority of coursework will be designed and produced using Adobe Photoshop. Prerequisites: Intro to Art. Available to students in grades 9-12.


Computer Art II 50.4724002 This course will acquaint students with additional digital media for production of art. The course continues development of artiststic skills and computer skills to communicate ideas through print and multi-media presentations. Course work will emphasize scanning, digital photography and a combination of computer and traditional art media. Students will design and produce art utilizing the bitnapped graphics program of Adobe Photoshop and vector graphics program, Adobe Illustrator. Prerequisites: Intro to Art and Computer Art 1. Available to students in grades 9-12.


Drawing & Painting I 50.4313001 Students will learn basic drawing skills, styles, techniques, materials, historical styles, periods, color theory & painting, processes of art criticism. Prerequisites: Intro. to Art. Available to students in grades 9-12.
 


Drawing & Painting II 50.4313002. Students will learn intermediate drawings & painting skills, techniques, materials, art historical styles and periods, art criticism and aesthetics. Prerequisites: Intro. to Art Drawing & Painting I. Available to students in grades 10-12.
 


Drawing & Painting III 50.432200. Students will learn advanced exploration of techniques, movements, art criticism, aesthetics, styles and periods. Prerequisites: Intro. to Art Drawing & Painting I, II. Available to students in grades 9-12.


Drawing & Painting IV 50.4322002 Students will engage in improvement and mastery of teaching materials, development of personal styles, movements; application of art criticismal and aesthetics. Prerequisites: Intro. to Art D & P III. Available to students in grades 10-12.


Jewelry Design I 50.4431001 Students will learn historical, social origins, and art critical processes and aesthetics. Prerequisites: Intro. to Art. Available to students in grades 9-12.


Photographic Design I 50.4711001 This is an introduction course to pinhole photography including making and exposing photos in darkroom. Prerequisites: Intro. to Art. Available to students in grades 9-12.

Photographic Design II    50.4711002 Students will work with 35mm cameras, expose and enlarge images in the darkroom. Advanced photographic techniques introduced. Prerequisites: Intro to Art and Photo I. Available to students in grades 9-12.

Photographic Design III   50.4712001. Students will learn advanced pinhole and/or 35mm techniques; advanced darkroom techniques; special effects. Prerequisites: Photo I, II. Available to students in grades 10-12. 

Printmaking 50.4511001  Printmaking I introduces art printmaking using monoprint, relief, collograph, intaglio, and serigraphy.  A variety of media and tools are explored.  The elements or art and principles of design are used to analyze, design, create, and evaluate prints.  The course combines aesthetics, art criticism and art history with studio production of print series. Prerequisites: Introduction to Art, or Art history I or II. 

Sculpture I 50.4611001 Students learn about additive, subtractive, and modeling methods for relief sculpture and sculpture in the round; elements and principles in three-dimensional form, historical origins, art criticism. Prerequisites: Intro. to Art. Available to students in grades 9-12.

Sculpture II 50.4611002 Students learn complex additive , subtractive and modeling methods for sculpture with traditional, non-traditional materials, historical origins and functions of sculpture in selected cultures. Prerequisites: Intro. to Art Sculpture I. Available to students in grades 10-12. 

Yearlong courses

AP Art History 50.2921010. Students develop an examination of major forms of artistic expression from the pre-historic to ancient worlds, ending with contemporary art.  The course is organized by chronological art movements and creates a frame for meaningful understanding that relates how and why works of art communicate visual meaning. Available to students in grades 10-12.

Advanced Placement Drawing Portfolio 50.4811010 Students earn AP college credit awarded by The College Board, based on evaluation of the portfolio, assembled over a two-semester sequence. Prerequisites: Intro. to Art, Drawing I and Drawing II. Available to students in grades 11 and 12.

Advanced Placement 2 D Design Portfolio 50.4813010 AP college credit is awarded by The College Board, based on evaluation of the portfolio, assembled over two-semester sequence. Prerequisites: Intro to Art, and Drawing & Painting I and II, or Photo I and II, or Computer Art I and II. Available to students in grades 11 and 12.

Advanced Placement 3D Design Port. 50.4814010 AP college credit awarded by The College Board, based on evaluation of the portfolio, assembled over a two-semester sequence. Prerequisites: Intro to Art and Ceramics 1, or Sculpture 1, or Jewelry/ with Art teacher recommendation. Available to students in grades 11 and 12.
